Intended to promote movement across sectors and develop an understanding of the impact of research on the wider economy and society, each Early Stage Researcher undertook a two-week Professional Internship Placement (PIP) as part of their training and development on the programme.
This was an opportunity to gain work experience that employed their scientific training in a new environment or different sector (e.g. academia, industry, media, policy making, consultancy, patent law). These placements were very beneficial to the ESRs to either consolidate their research knowledge and skills in a new environment or to experience work within a different sector.
A wide range of associate partners provided placements, including Berkeley and Stanford Universitites, Novartis, Nature Publishing, Boult Wade Tennant LLP and Bio Nano Consulting.
